JINAILIME
Jina Song (b.1993, South Korea) started her artistic profession as a painter and shifted her focus to the multidisciplinary arts, as a storyteller, fiction writer, film-maker, performer, choreographer, dancer, and designer of sounds, sets, costumes, and moving images.
Her enquiry concerns ideas of process, presence, and experience first and foremost, with the creation of objects and things as an intuitive offshoot. The permeability between her lived experience and creative output is not easily accommodated by linear frameworks. With the medium of contemporary fiction, Song draws the audience to accept this vagueness and offers in exchange something immediate, real, and alive.
Song's recent work stems from a semi-autobiographical narrative which follows the lives of three women: Sinja, Agnes, and Nawoon. With no dominant timeline, the story materialises as a series of scattered moments in which the artist's role is left intentionally unclear. Within it, she explores themes of collective memory, transgenerational trauma, relationships, and personal identity as it relates to nationality and shared experiences.
